How to Get Rid of your Child's Pacifier

When my son used his pacifier it was only for naptime and bedtime. It was a rule of ours to never let it leave the crib because I did not want my kids to become too attached to it. Well, I now realize that I think I was more attached to it than they were! I waited so long because I felt bad taking away something that brought them comfort and security every night.I finally decided that it was time and that I would have to take it away. I tried coming up with what I could tell him like "Big Boys don't use pacifiers" and "These are for babies," but I know he would just put up a fight. Plus, they did not really understand either of those since they were young. So, since my kids understood the concept of something being broken I decided to cut the tip of the nipple off of the pacifier so that when he went to use it he would realize that it was 'broken. We always used this type of pacifier so it was not hard to cut the tip off. Not sure about other kinds of pacifiers but I am sure it would work fine. ' Surprisingly, it worked! I made sure that I cut the tip off of the pacifier and left it in their bed until bedtime came around. With my oldest son he put it in his mouth he immediately took it out and stared at it. I told him that 'paci' was broken and he handed it to me and laid down!! AHH! I was shocked!!I walked out of his room and instantly felt horrible! I felt guilty that I did it and took away something that he loved and used everyday. Luckily, he did not cry and slept fine so it made me feel a little better about my decision. I was still very shocked when nap time came the next day and he laid down and asked me where 'paci' was and I told him again that it was broken, and to my surprise he fell right asleep!I then had to go around the house and find all of our pacifiers so that he did not find one.Maybe I got off easy because I have definitely heard a lot of stories from other moms about how hard it was to get their child to stop using their pacifier. It is safe to say that I think I was more afraid and worried about hurting his feelings and upsetting him then he was actually attached to it.Let me know what it was like taking away your child's pacifier?
