Taking Care of our First Baby

Before we had children, and before we were married, we had Onyx. My first baby. Well, I should say my first fur-baby, but to us she is a member of our family.

My husband and I rescued Onyx when she was only two months old and we have loved every minute of it. She has been with us through good times and bad, and is the protector of our family. Now that we have three boys, Onyx has become a mother to them as well. It truly is amazing to see her follow my kids and protect them now too.

This month we celebrated her ninth birthday, which is crazy to me because I cannot believe how fast those nine years passed us by. The more I thought about her age the more I realized that we needed to start to feed her a dog food that is specifically made for older dogs.

As Onyx has gotten older we have noticed a decline in her playfulness and she often struggles when we take her for walks compared to when she was younger. Also, she sometimes will be distant from us and spend a lot of time in another room of our home.

It is difficult for me to accept these changes because I still see her as a puppy. I feel bad for waiting this long to find a dog food that is designed for dogs her age.

So, we headed to our local PetSmart with both of our dogs, and our three boys, to purchase a new food that could provide Onyx with everything she needs as an adult dog.

Petsmart Visit

We have always been loyal to Purina and it is the only brand of food that we have given to both of our dogs. Luckily, we quickly found the dog food aisle because of the signs clearly marked signs.

We purchased the Purina® Pro Plan® BRIGHT MIND 7+ large breed formula, which contains enhanced botanical oils that are shown to promote alertness and mental sharpness in older dogs. According to experts, around the age of seven, the glucose metabolism in a dog’s brain begins to change, which can affect memory, learning, awareness or decision making. The Purina Pro Plan dog food discovered a way to promote mental sharpness and increase cognitive awareness in adult dogs with their BRIGHT MIND Adult 7+ formulas.

We followed the instructions on the back of the bag to make a gradual switch to this new dog food. Onyx seemed to really enjoy the taste of the food and I look forward to observing the changes in her from making the switch toPurina® Pro Plan® BRIGHT MIND 7+.

Purina ProPlan was kind enough to send us this GoPro video camera as she transitions to this new dog food.  So, today I wanted to share this totally adorable and awesome video of Onyx and our family so that you could get a sneak peek into why we lover her so much. Next time I will show you what it is like to be Onyx “a day in the life of a dog!”

Meet Onyx! She just turned 9, so today I am talking about how we are transitioning her to a dog food that is made for…
