Personal Capital Review – Planning for Retirement

How would you like to use a free personal finance software to help you better manage your finances? Today, I am going to share with you my Personal Capital review that will help you to make your finances as simple and as easy as possible.

Over the past few years my husband and I have been on a quest to find a tool that can help us plan for retirement. I am embarrassed to say that we are just now starting to focus on planning and saving for retirement.

The idea of retiring was never even a thought we considered until we had our first child. But, before we knew it he was already five and we still had not taken the time to figure out a plan or what we could be doing now for our future.

Now, with three little boys we want to do anything and everything we can to protect them. We have already purchased life insurance and recently we began a college fund for all three of our kids. This got us seriously thinking about retirement and our future and how we can take control now to properly plan for when that time comes. If we don’t do it who will?

I like to think that we make wise decisions with our money. I absolutely love using spreadsheets and tracking our monthly income and expenses with my Yearly Household Budget, but I have always avoided seeing the big picture. My focus has always been on the things we are doing now to pay our bills or increase our savings account. I feel like we are on the right track, but I am scared to see our entire portfolio.

Before I became a stay at home Mom I had a retirement account that withdrew money from my bi-weekly paychecks. That account has not been touched in 5 years! Not to mention my husband’s retirement account, our mortgage, and bank accounts. It is hard keeping track of everything. Especially now that we have started college funding accounts for our boys. This is what got my husband and I started with thinking about retirement.

In comes Personal Capital. Maybe I am a little bit behind the times but I had never heard of Personal Capital, have you?

Personal Capital is personal finance software that allows you to track and manage your finances and investments. You are able to connect all of your accounts including credit cards, investments, retirement accounts, mortgage, etc. But, the best part is …. its FREE! This software will help you to track your cash flow so that you can see how much you are spending and saving.

I was a little bit hesitant at first. I did not like the idea of connecting all of my accounts in this one place. But, their site is safe and secure. You can access your account from your computer or even your phone. You are even able to access it on your Apple Watch and set a monthly spending goal that you can track on a daily or weekly basis.

Between our personal and business accounts it is hard keeping up with everything:

  • 3 Checking Accounts
  • 5 Savings Accounts
  • 1 Mortgage
  • 3 Retirement Accounts
…. and thats only a few of them!

Personal Capital has over 800,000 users and more than $150 billion is being tracked using their unique software.

Not only is it easy to use, but you will be able to measure your financial progress and net worth in a complete picture with all of your finances. This will help you to see if you are on the right track.

Personally, we wanted to get an idea of what we can do to start working towards our retirement goal. It is nice to see that we are on the right track financially. You are able to see the big picture. A lot of people hide and do not want to see how ‘bad’ it may be. This may be a difficult process or even a ‘wake up call,’ but start today and don’t wait. If you are committed you can begin to make changes to help you go in the right direction with your finances.

Even though we are far, far away from retiring we at least can look at where we are headed and figure out what percentage we should be putting away each month for college, retirement, investments, etc.

Here are some of the things you can do with Personal Capital:

  • Track net worth
  • Free investment checkups
  • Manage your investments to see how well they are doing
  • Analyze risk assessment
  • Prepare for retirement
  • View bills and analyze your spending
  • Monitor and reduce debt
  • Check fees on investments to compare to industry standards

So, you are probably wondering why this is all free. What’s the catch? Well, their services are al free, but they hope that you love what they have to offer so much that you decide to partner with them to manage your investments {it is not required}.

Is Personal Capital worth it?

Getting started with Personal Capital is VERY easy. Once you create an account you will be able to link all of your finances easily with their software. It is an excellent tool to keep track of your investments, banking and loans. Being able to access all of your accounts in one place can help you to make better decisions when it comes to investing your money. Plus, I am always looking for ways to save time.

I would love to know how you manage your finances and if you have started planning for retirement?
