Traveling With Kids – Preventing Boredom

While traveling with kids can be quite an arduous task due to boredom, frequent snack and bathroom breaks and the favorite phrase “are we there yet?” — the reality is that it doesn’t have to be. While entertaining bored kids stuck in a vehicle is not exactly easy, it can be done and even without slapping a bunch of portable game systems in their paws. All you need is a little patience and some reminiscence into what you did on long trips when you were a kid.

If you are taking a trip you with kids you will want to check out our fun and frugal ideas that the whole family will enjoy. Here are a few suggestions on how traveling with kids can be made slightly easier.

Tips for Traveling with Kids

1. Sightseeing

Make a few “good” stops along the way. Every long trip has at least a few sights that can be seen along the way. When planning the trip, pick out a few and space them so that the trip does not seem as long. It will not only help you maintain patience when traveling with kids but also help you as the driver stay more alert as you will spend fewer consecutive hours on the road.

 2. Road Games

Road games are actually pretty fun. While “car poker” and “eye spy” are not fun sounding, even teenagers will find themselves playing after a few minutes. If this is not your thing, you can also invest in a few travel-sized games from Hasbro, like Battleship and Connect Four. A deck of cards and a flat surface can be a very good investment as well for traveling with kids. While it is easy to simply get a portable DVD player or game systems and placate them, this does not have to be the case.

 3. Small Snacks

Having food and drinks on hand can prevent you from having to make unnecessary stops on your tip. Pack a cooler with easy snacks that will satisfy your kids and keep them full. I would suggest to consider bringing a small potty chair if your children are young especially if you will be giving them drinks along the way.

Traveling with kids can be difficult and stressful so it is always a good idea to talk with your family first before going on a long car ride. Explain to them what it will be like and what they will be doing in the car.
