4th of July Ideas for Kids:

One of the easiest ways to explain Independence Day to kids is that it is America's Birthday. For your littlest ones, this may be enough, but older kids can understand a little bit more. Explain to them that the founders of our country decided that they weren't going to follow orders from the King of Britain anymore. They decided that America would be an independent country and this is the day we celebrate that. The American Flag is a special symbol for our country. Talk to your kids about the stars and stripes representing the states and colonies. Teach them that we treat the flag with respect and how special it is to us. Get an open discussion going with them about freedom and independence. The dialogue will get them thinking and talking about why we celebrate this day and what it means to us.Arts and crafts projects are a great way to teach kids while they are doing something fun. They can make their own American Flags or their own version of a Declaration of Independence that the whole family can sign. Ask them how they would feel if they were one of our country's founders and you were the King of Britain. What would they say to you? How would they go about becoming independent of you?
